Student Visa Family Rules After October 2026: Questions for Partners and Children

Updated: 4 November 2026 | Crystal Global Study Australia

Planning further study with a partner or children involves more than selecting your next course. The student visa family rules changed on 2 October 2026, so review the family position before making enrolment and financial commitments.

Can family members be included?

Home Affairs says family inclusion is now limited to applicants meeting an exemption. Categories include PhD students, certain government-sponsored or scholarship students and eligible Pacific or ASEAN nationals. Each category has detailed conditions. See the official family guidance.

Can a partner join later?

Home Affairs states that subsequent entrant applications are no longer available after a Student visa grant. Where family inclusion is permitted, the primary applicant and included family must apply together from the same location. Do not rely on older advice suggesting a partner can simply be added later.

What about family already included on a current visa?

Existing-family arrangements may be available in specified circumstances, including some further onshore applications, course completion and provider default. The current family visa history, application location and exemption criteria must all be reviewed. Your family’s situation should not be assessed using a general summary alone.

Does a research master’s have the PhD exemption?

No automatic equivalence should be assumed. Home Affairs expressly excludes Master’s by Research study from the doctoral family exemption. Another exemption may require consideration. Read the full Student visa criteria.

Prepare a family planning checklist

Before committing to the next intake, organise a factual summary for your migration professional:

  • The current visa and application history of every family member.
  • Where each person is presently located.
  • The proposed qualification, provider and start date.
  • Any sponsorship or scholarship evidence.
  • Children’s schooling plans and anticipated family costs.

Keep the provider’s academic offer separate from the immigration assessment. An offer addressed to the student does not establish that a partner or child can be included.

Choose a course for its educational value

Compare curriculum, supervision where relevant, entry requirements and career relevance. Avoid selecting a qualification solely on an assumption about dependants. Discuss the educational options and family circumstances with the appropriate professionals before paying a deposit.
