If you need an offshore Student visa application while your course remains unfinished, coordinate the academic and immigration parts early. Avoid making travel plans based only on the assumption that classes can move online.
Check whether offshore application is required
Home Affairs provides guidance for students who changed providers since their current visa grant or need more than 12 additional months to finish. It says these students do not meet the course-completion exemption and describes offshore lodgement and grant requirements. Other exemptions require separate review. Read the official offshore guide.
Ask the provider for a written academic plan
List outstanding subjects, scheduled classes, assessments, placements and the expected completion date. Ask what happens if you are unable to attend campus for a period.
Kaplan’s student FAQ discusses considering online study, reduced loads or suspension for affected students. Availability depends on the individual case. A different institution may offer different arrangements.
Can you study online while overseas?
Ask for written confirmation for each subject. Practical learning, professional placements and attendance requirements can restrict what is possible. Provider approval for offshore delivery is not a ruling on whether that study counts towards a future visa.
Home Affairs’ 485 study guidance states that online or correspondence study completed outside Australia does not satisfy the required Australian study on the ordinary rules described there. Historical concessions may need separate assessment if relevant to your study record. Have your actual dates reviewed before altering delivery arrangements.
Prepare for possible delays
- Confirm the latest arrival or re-enrolment date.
- Ask about deferral deadlines and any charges.
- Check whether placements can be rescheduled.
- Request the current CoE and supporting academic documents.
- Clarify how changes would affect your course end date.
Home Affairs explains that an offshore application does not create an associated Bridging visa. Check its application and travel guidance. Do not assume an application allows you to remain in, re-enter or study in Australia.
Keep decisions and documents consistent
Share the approved academic plan with your migration professional. If your provider later changes your enrolment, ask whether further documents are needed. Avoid promises about processing time or return dates; plan around confirmed arrangements and individual advice.
