Finishing your course and thinking about another qualification? Planning further study in Australia now requires careful coordination of your admission offer, course level and timing.
The October 2026 changes make it especially important to check your next steps before accepting an offer or paying a tuition deposit.
Why does course progression matter?
Home Affairs says current Student visa holders generally need an exemption to apply for another Student visa in Australia. One exemption concerns completed main-course study followed by a qualification at a higher Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level. If the completed course is higher education, the next course must also be higher education delivered by a higher education provider. These are only part of the criteria, not an individual eligibility assessment. Read the full Student visa requirements.
Can I rely on a packaged offer?
Home Affairs states that applicants relying on course progression cannot package courses and must have only one future course when applying. It gives the example of a completed bachelor followed by a graduate certificate and master’s package requiring an offshore application. Separate packaging exceptions exist for school study, PhD study and provider default.
Its guidance also expects the first available intake and minimal gaps, generally up to two calendar months during the teaching year or four between standard academic years. Review the official onshore application guidance before making plans.
Admission questions to ask your next provider
- Academic entry: Is your completed qualification accepted, and is a minimum result required?
- English evidence: Which test results or previous-study evidence are accepted for this specific course?
- Prerequisites: Are particular subjects, professional experience, a portfolio or other checks required?
- Course level: What is the qualification’s AQF level and education sector?
- Timing: When can you obtain your completion evidence, and what is the next available intake?
- Cost: What are the deposit, total fees and refund conditions?
Request answers in writing. Keep the academic admission assessment separate from any assessment of your ability to lodge a visa application in Australia.
Prepare your documents early
Create a folder containing your transcript, completion letter when available, existing CoE, English evidence and any course-specific supporting documents. Prepare a short statement explaining how the proposed qualification develops your knowledge and supports your career direction.
For research study, ask about the proposal, supervision and research-experience requirements before applying. A course title alone does not tell you whether your background meets the provider’s criteria.
Build a practical study plan
Compare at least the entry requirements, curriculum, duration, location and total cost. If you are considering a provider change, read our onshore student transfer guide. Check individual immigration questions with an appropriately qualified professional before committing.
