Student Visa Expiring Before Your Course Ends? October 2026 FAQs

Updated: 3 November 2026 | Crystal Global Study Australia

If your Student visa expires before your course ends, start by reviewing both your remaining academic requirements and the rules for your next application. A revised study plan and a further visa application are separate matters.

This guide addresses recurring questions appearing in provider and government student guidance after the October 2026 changes. It is general information, not an assessment of your visa eligibility.

Can I apply for another Student visa while in Australia?

From 2 October 2026, current Student visa holders generally need an exemption to make a further onshore application. The changes do not alter your current Student visa. Review the Home Affairs onshore application guidance.

I only need a few more months. Is that enough?

Not by itself. The course-completion exemption includes up to 12 additional months beyond the original course end date, continued study with the same provider for which the current visa was granted, and the main course where study is packaged. Home Affairs also specifies requirements concerning course changes and qualification level. Read the complete exemption criteria and obtain individual advice.

What if I changed education providers?

Home Affairs states that students who changed providers since their current visa grant do not meet the course-completion exemption. Its guidance requires an offshore application and grant for affected students needing a new visa to finish. Other exemptions must be assessed separately. See the official offshore guidance.

Can summer classes or extra subjects help me finish earlier?

Ask your provider for an academic review. Kaplan Business School and Stanley College discuss additional study options in their student FAQs, subject to approval. That does not mean every institution offers these options or every student qualifies.

Before agreeing to an accelerated plan, ask about prerequisites, unit availability, assessment deadlines, placement requirements, fees and the realistic date for confirmed results. Do not enrol in extra subjects on an assumption that they will count towards your qualification.

Is my last class date the same as my completion date?

Not necessarily. Marking and formal academic approval may still be outstanding. Ask when your final transcript and completion letter can be issued. An expected completion letter records an expectation; it is not confirmation that every requirement has been passed.

Can I keep studying online while overseas?

Do not assume this is available. Ask your provider to confirm the permitted arrangements in writing, particularly for practical subjects and placements. Your migration professional should separately review any implications of travel and the proposed application.

What should I prepare now?

  • Your current CoE and latest transcript.
  • A provider-confirmed list of outstanding subjects and placements.
  • The original and revised expected course end dates.
  • Your current visa grant details and provider history.
  • Written details of any approved academic changes.

Ask the academic team to establish what is possible educationally, and seek immigration advice promptly if your expiry date is approaching. An updated CoE or learning plan does not itself establish visa eligibility.
